Did DFD vs Tantrum happen right after? They're the only two battles after sunset from this event, as far as I can tell.

Yes. After a long break it did. We had a big break before Diz/Saurus and the 2 v 2. 2 hour break or something.

Word up. I'm still trying to make sense of all of the detailed talk about mens asses. Even if all these lines are all supposed to come out of a place of homophobia I can't help but thing that they emerge out of a subconscious pool of fantasies of homosexual pleasure. There's a difference between just shouting "you're a faggot! and I hate faggots!" and doing 8 bars like "you love jerking cock and slurping cum and getting rimmed and having gay orgies" and on and on which is what these rappers do.

Loud and proud, brother.

Lil Kreb vs Diaz

Lil Kreb vs Diaz
Jan 20, 2009
8550 views

Oh fuck off. I don't believe for a second that there's going to be anything good about this. Fucking Florida no names battling eachother for no good reason. Once the Fresh Coast and NY divisions were secured there was no reason to supply the channel with junk like this.

Maybe it's better than that..... oh god..

I would love it if Diaz was Porich's 2vs2 tournament partner but no dice. It's some loser from Tampa Florida.

Lil Kreb looks like an idiot who got kicked out of an audition for one of Lou Perlman's boy bands. This is his fifth battle for fucks sake.

Mosh looks like he's loving Kreb's performance. Kreb is basically a Mosh clone so no wonder.

Honestly Diaz isn't bad. He's better than Kreb and he started with a line about how Mad Illz told him he'd have to start at the bottom and he called Kreb Mosh's puppet. Yep. my expectations were pretty low but Diaz surprised me. he got a round of applause at the end of his third.

Other problem with Kreb, who I'm biased against, is that he has Kid Twist's voice.

4 to 1 in favour of overtime. the 5th judge voted Diaz.

Diaz is freestyling his OT, it started off well but he can't keep the momentum up and goes into the "yo, yo, check it out' pattern. I hope he wins but it's hard if Kreb has an OT round prepared.

3 to 2 voted for Krebs.

Sahtyre vs Element

Sahtyre vs Element
Jan 20, 2009
35179

Not quite Sahtyre's debut because of the two v two. I always liked Sahtyre and I don't think I've ever watched this so I'm interested.

The first tryout battle on Grind Time. Hosted by Dumbfoundead and Lush.

Dumb announced that they'll do a bar exam event every two months. Did they keep that going? Bar Exam is a cool name for a tryout event.

Sathyre is cracking jokes and its kinda funny but the crowd's errupting over jokes I don't really get or things that don't come out on video. Like he has a bunch of jokes about Element's big head and, I dunno, his head looks normal sized to me. I mean, it's not like he's Bonk or something. It's kinda like all of Jonny Storm's jokes about Maniphest Destine's teeth - they might be snaggled as fuck but I haven't been able to get a good look at them on video.

Element is on Babygrande? Did he release anything? He's freestyling and its okay, above average freestyles. He ended his first round yelling about diarreah which I'd rather not hear about. He said something about how he had a vasectomy but I can't understand most of the bar.

Saht had a line about Element's Rodney Dangerfield shirt and then said "your whole style is irrelevant, did you know this was a battle, you sound like you're trying to freestyle for the hell of it." Saht's getting into his zone in the second. "When it comes to accapella battles you're out of your element"
Element "predicted" Saht's periodical table bar "wackets element on the periodical table" and it was obnoxious.

Element's treading water in his second with weaker freestyles than in his first. Sahtyre's going to win. "Just stop rapping and be a graph writer" "hip hop has four elements and you ain't none of them bitch."

More freestyles from Element. Judges unanimous for Sahtyre. Everyone gave Element props for freestyling. "He did his thing and came hard"

Alpha MC vs Celestial

Alpha MC vs Celestial
Jan 20, 2009
22558 views

Never heard of either rapper, not expecting much except that this has a much higher view count than the typical shitty battle so maybe there's something to it. It's another Dumb hosted Bar Exam battle.

Both rappers have dumb names for rappers. Celestial has to be a part of a group.

Alpha's start is weak, "I was born first, I'm going first, I'm going to drop my album first, and you think you can fuck with alpha twerp?"

If Alpha is freestyling he's kinda good, if it's written, its weak.

Camerawork is weird. There are these weird closeups of Alpha and Celestial out of nowhere.

Oh my god, Celestial is a major nerd and its going to be hard to get through this whole thing. His voice is attrocious and he does this finger-wagging gesture constantly and he says stuff like "this is what happens when your lonely father bones an otter." He's getting a round of applaus for his weak nerd rap. I don't like him. Alpha's a better rapper and he built some steam in his second.

Celestial, who I don't like, also does a move with his arms I mostly see Illusion Z and Tantrum do, where they hold up both arms to their sides in a "don't ask me! I don't know!" kind of gesture.

Alpha's 3rd is kinda good. Does he ever come back?

Celestial's forced terrible multisyllable style is awful. I can't stand it, awww.... I hate it.

First judge likes Alpha, the rest want an OT. Grrrr.

Celestial's all agressive in the OT. Alpha won, good.

Jroz vs Emseadez

Jroz vs Emseadez
Jan 20, 2009
18376 views

Another Bar Exam battle, two women battling... we'll see how it goes. Never heard of either of them.

I like a 'you look like' bar that actually fits. Emseadez said that Jroz looks like Howard Stern without the perm, and she kinda does.

Everyone liked Emseadez first round and I gotta admit it was pretty good but it was also stuff about Jroz everyone there seems to know and I have no idea.

Jroz sounds a little more like a Florida battler freestyling which is what I was expecting. Jroz has her moments but Emseadez is going to win this for sure.

"you haven't been in Blowed in a minute. Too embarassed, too many blowdians hit it" - I remember hearing about Project Blowed years before I ever saw a battler make reference to it, but it seemed like something that produced underground rap classics. At some point did it become a battle rap crew? At some point did it become a wack battle rap crew? It sounds cool for someone like Dumb to drop "project blowed" in his intro, but Lyraflip and Malathion were doing that too

"if this was a barmitzvah she would be the 13 year old jewish boy"

Emseadez said something like "you came to a written battle with freestyles" probably the first time a prepared battler told one of these dumb freestylers they're supposed to write for these battles.

Jim Dutch vs Abstract Vision

Jim Dutch vs Abstract Vision
Jan 21, 2009
7148 views

Jim Dutch who already battled Friday Da 13th in what must have been a garbage battle goes against Abstract Vision, who I never heard of. At the NY event where Hollow battled Philly.

If this battle is trash, which I'm fully expecting it to be, then it goes against everything Drect has been saying about quality control. Are there battles that were so bad they couldn't release them? It seems like their standards are pretty low so if there were battles that never came out, they must have just been rappers mumbling or wordless shrieking or something.

Jaze is hosting. Was PH hosting the good battles and jaze got the bad ones?

Jaze lets the flipped coin fall all the way to the floor again. Is that so people can see it or to prove there's no interference or something?

Hollow and Swallow lines 10 seconds in. Not interested in taking notes here.

Two pointless losers freestyling poorly. How about you shut up, guys. Abstract Visions might be a bit funnier and better but its not great. His voice is noise.

JUdges sound like they don't care and are just picking a winner cause they have to. They chose Jim Dutch. Frankie Wapps gives an overview of 'swag' in his judgement.

EX-I vs Franco

EX-I vs Franco
Jan 22, 2009
41076

North West event, Illmac hosting. A battle 4 years in the making - a rematch of epic proportions. Both dudes second GT battle.

EX-I's strength is stampedishness. Don't know what that means.

EX-I's going over some battle rap tropes in style "Who knew a love child came out of the smurfette and gargamel feud."

Franco's got a "his dad rapes him in his ass cheeks" line. Few bars later, "this is bro rape, and you gettin' ass fucked"

Crowd went nuts when he said "you wearing cement shoes like Jimmy Hoffa" - was Hoffa an important name in Portland.

EX-I is so intense looking. Half his bars are meant to be funny but he looks pissed and red and sweaty through the whole thing.

Franco: "You look like the spokesman for alien workshop" I remember that brand!

Franco says something like "your asshole is stretched to the size of a manhole" and then has a line about Jimmy Hendrix and Jim Morrison... meaning he's now named three Jimmys in this battle.

Goes to OT. Franco's third and his OT is just him rapping like crazy. He said something like "This idiot got into a car accident and got a DUI like a month later" is that real talk?

EX-I's OT is something about Franco going to Boston for something and losing, EX-I said "I can tell you what your problem is, you went full Retard" and he got a big reaction. Behind the scenes battle stuff I don't get?

Judges unanimously chose Franco as winner.

I think this was the first time I've seen the OT round with the rest of the battle in a single video.

Not even that exciting. It was a Tropic Thunder reference. The movie had just come out at that time.

The Jimmy Hoffa bar is also a topical reference. At that time there was renewed interest in the case because everyone was expecting his body to be found when the stadium got renovated.A popular theory that is probably right was that the body had likely been disposed of in the river

New Eruh vs Ubserd
Jan 22, 2009
6107 views

Awwwww...... Florida battle between two losers. Don't want to watch but this is what I chose. Not great that there's a part two. Maybe it'll surprise me.

305 all day.

New Eruh off the bat called Ubserd kung fu panda and then spit some nonsense that the crowd's going nuts to.

Ubserd is getting called fat again and he's not especially fat. He's husky maybe, you know. But "You need a coffin the size of a minivan" he's no where near that fat. He's not as fat as Mad Illz, for example, and I would call Mad Illz 'chunky' but not like minivan obese size.

Ubserd's winning, for what its worth. He's probably going to be named champ of GT soon. New Eruh's just going on and on with his eyes closed the whole time. Nothing else to say. I can't watch all of this, it's too hard to get through.

So it goes.

Rhapsodist vs Soul Khan

Rhapsodist vs Soul Khan
Jan 26, 2009
335608 views

Yes! A probably good battle from New York! I've never seen this but I'm excited for Soul Khan. Don't expect much from Rhapsodist but who cares? He's just cannon fodder here.

PK hosted.

Rhapsodist's hometown was 'Western Hemisphere' which is half a planet from saying 'Earth' is your home like you're on Star Trek.

Should opening bars be strong? I kinda think they should be. They set the tone, right? Rhapsodist's first lines were "I heard about you, you wanted to be a jew docta but they wouldn't let you do nada because your face looks like chewbacca". I hate this opener, Soul Khan doesn't look like chewbacca at all and even if he did obviously you can have a weird face and still be a jew doctor. If the part about being a doctor was just a dumb setup to call Soul Khan ugly then that's a lot of wasted multi rhyming for a payoff of zero.

No one's reacting. There's some awkward laughing. He goes up and down in his volume and I know how bad this is going to contrast when Soul Khan starts because Khan's probably going to be way louder right away and get a laugh off his first bar and if that happens Rhapsodist is done.

Yep, Soul Khan's making Rhapsodist look bad. "Right Now we're in Hiphop's HQ and let me tell you, Hip Hop hates you". Soul Khan has got to be one of the all-time greats when it comes to just fullon set-up/punch battling. When time is called he's getting a big cheer and it quiets right down once Rhapsodist starts with "you can't belittle me, saying I'm from italy, when you come from the middle east."

Soul Khan's got another big reaction at the end of his second. Everyone's loving it. The camera starts shaking when Soul Khan says something funny and I think whoever's holding it is laughing or jumping up and down or something.

Man, Rhapsodist was just lameo. Soul Khan won, obviously.

Tank Lipp vs Jist the Klepto

Tank Lipp vs Jist the Klepto
Jan 27, 2009
12952 views

Oh fuck, the worst of the worst. A florida battle with Tank Lipp, in my opinion the bottom of th bottom along with V-Money. I'm putting my mind in the frame of mind to observe a shit festival. Fuck quality control in 09'.

Tank Lipp is now named Tank AKA Jason Tank.

Someone clapped loudly after the Jist intro.

Goddammit, Tank Lipp chokes almost immediately. Then he goes into mom lines. Tank Lipp overdoes the 'fucking your mom' aspect in every battle.

Ohhhh! Jist has some lines about Tank Lipp being the reason for Drect talking about quality control!

Jist is a bit funny, he's funnier than Tank Lipp. Jist is not a good name though, it definitely sounds bad.

Tank starts choking in his second then he just turns around and walks all the way out of the venue so Jist won. Jist isn't bad so he was probably going to win anyways.

Tank comes back and they let him spit his rounds anyways and he's suddenly way better than he's ever been, as if the pressure of winning a FL grind time battle was keeping him from shining. Not that he's great here but he is better.

New York Giant vs Ice

New York Giant vs Ice
Jan 28, 2009
6463 views

A low viewed NY battle from the same event as the two most popular GT battles of Jan 2009 (Hollow vs Philly and Soul Khan vs Rhapsodist). I am honestly surprised to see New York Giant again and I feel like if GT had their own verson of those no-name wrestlers I remember wrestling against the big names on the WWF show when I was a kid, well, in GT they'd have names like Ice.

Jaze is hosting. PH hosted the SK battle. I think its been pretty consistent that Jaze has hosted the shit battles from this event and PH hosts the good ones with higher profile rappers.

Ice just had a bunch of question marks on his intro card.

New York Giant starts off with cookie cutter freestyles, totally sucks. I hope Ice is okay or this is going to be a long nine minutes and fifty-five seconds.

Fuck, Ice had nothing going for him but a nice flow but then he fucked up when he said "I flow perfect" he stumbled on that. Also Ice's filler phrase is "I'm sorry" which isn't great. Don't expect to see either of these guys again.
Camera just shows the crowd for a lot of NYG's third and people are looking all around.

Judges chose Ice.

XT The Factor vs Young Nate

XT The Factor vs Young Nate
Jan 29, 2009
9754 views

Another Northwest battle with Illmac and Lush hosting.

XT's third battle, Young Nate's second. Both these dudes have bad losses but XT bounced back after D-Lor a little bit and I'm expecting him to win.

XT's wearing a cooll gun shirt.

Young Nate shouts Money Gang in his intro. How many people have claimed Money Gang over the year.

XT's doing ok, I dunno, kind of a generic multisyllab style for Fresh Coast, like if rappers like Tantrum are second rate for Fresh Coast, XT's third rate. Young Nate's no better though so I don't care. XT is kind of doing the EX-I style of supper aggressive joke-telling and his neck veins are sticking out so much they look like they're going to detatch from his body. He's flapping his hands up and down with every line. Young Nate has better arm control but his clothes look stupid. Nate's performing better overall though.

Ok Young Nate won, good for him.

So this was the last battle of Jan 2009.

Grind Time Now uploaded 27 battles in January 2009.

As of Nov 9, 2019 these battles have accumulated a combined 1,664,498 views. 1,190,369 of those views come from three battles: Hollow vs Philly, Wapps & Juce vs Dumb and Saht, and Rhapsodist vs Soul Khan.

Those three battles are also the only battles from the month that have cracked 100k views, the fourth highest viewed battle of Jan 09 was Illusion-Z vs 9DM at 55,008 views. The other 23 battles of the month all got less than 50k views, in fact, 15 of those 23 have recieved less than 20k views over the past 10 years and 7 of those 15 are at less than 10k.

I'm only breaking down the views like this just because a picture is forming around the overall quality of this channel. These battles deserve the amount of views they got: most of them ARE bad, and the higher viewed battles are waay better. Considering this is the month when control on quality were supposed to begin, according to Drect, it seemed like they still uploaded every single thing they had. What were the costs associated with the production and release of all those videos they must have known wouldn't be viewed?

SOmething I didn't notice until I took stock of the month was that I didn't have to watch a single Mosh Jelton or Unorthodox Phrases battle. Considering Mosh battled 8 times in 2008 and Phrases battled 6 times, it's pretty nice to get a break from hearing them.

122 battlers have now battled on GTN by the end of Jan 2009.
