Any thoughtul roundtable discussions on race relations in battle rap?

Like a podcast or something. Something with knowledgeable people from a diverse set of backgrounds

Does something like that exist?

Tall order. You'd presumably want a battle fan with knowledge of multiple leagues, non-white, relatively articulate/able to express themselves, with a well rounded perspective and knowledge of social issues. Also, with the urge to actually participate.

Then multiply this by 3.

I don't think an algorithm could find that cat. I'd do it, but I have clear biases.

Mad flex and Ness Lee were on the rmbva podcast and they had a 45is minute segment discussing race in battle rap that was pretty interesting

Not going to work out. Most battle rap fans (and rappers for that matter) are completely trash at discussing anything other than battle rap.

Sorry on the length. I can't actually recall when the discussion was. I dug the conversation a lot, though.

Will listen soon. I already think that they both have contaminated opinions since they're both in the thick of things and I don't believe that they see the forest for the trees, but I'll take that back if I'm wrong...

I've been skipping forward to find it and the discussion seems to start somewhere in earnest around 1 hour 10 minutes (maybe a little before that) and becomes the actual topic around 1:13:00.

I was very wrong. I'm listening now and it's a really good discussion so far. I skipped about an hour or so into the podcast and I agree with a lot and learned about some new perspectives. Not just on racial stuff, but just on what battle rappers think about battle rap. Pretty cool so far.

Word, thanks for finding that spot.

If there any critiques of what I said, let me know.

Yeah I listened to the first couple minutes then jumped an hour ahead. Got better then.

*edit

There were some interesting things said. Tbh, not too much racial talk, but I respect their perspectives. What I really found interesting was what they said about fans talking shit to battlers. I really, really think that more battle rap fans should hear that part. What they were talking about is one of the reasons why I never shit on battle rappers (unless they disrespect me first). Btw, I don't mean that fans shouldn't have an opinion, they most definitely should, but targeting people and saying fucked up shit to them is a really bad look, and it doesn't reflect well on yourself. Cool little listen.

Those were my big take aways as well, and that doesn't even necessarily have to do with race but that disconnect people have as fans and sometimes even as battlers.

Yeah, I think if a lot of battle fans heard that part, they might second guess some of the things they say/do.

One other thing that I just remembered was about how they acknowledge that battles set up to be white guy vs black guy are going to get racial. My issue is, if people are aware that this is going to occur, then why are racially divisive battle still being set up? Makes no sense to me.

People setting up and participating in these battles are causing this same divide that I think most people agree is bad for the culture.

Do you think any battle with people of different races are racially divisive or is it just the context in which they are set up in? Or do you think specifically white versus black battles, specifically street vs backpack, set up by some league like KOTD in front of their fans to be the problem?

I have a different stance on it than you since I have no horse in that race but still have an opinion on racial issues in battle rap, and I don't think the battles themselves are necessarily divisive but rather the angles battlers choose to take and the fans fanning the flames of racial tension. Leagues don't help it either since to them it's all about marketing and catering to the fans, and sometimes that involves playing along those racial lines.

"...the context in which they are set up in"

That's it, 100%

I'm not against white guys and black guys battling, AT ALL. It's the ironic, tongue in cheek, social/political statement, "ebony vs ivory", "oh, wouldn't it be funny, if..." type of battles that I think are illegitimate.

But, my stance might be more inline with yours than you think. Me being a black dude notwithstanding, I see the same things that you said in your last paragraph, and those are exactly the things I object to. It goes beyond the 50-300 people in the building. I'm pretty jaded tho, tbf.
