#BARS - The First battlerap book just came out - Only $15

I just got mine in the mail.

Guys, this book is really dope, and took years to put together. It's got over 300+ pages, comprised of interviews with 150+ battlers/organizers. It's got stories/history from just about every one that is important: Thesaurus, Smack, Jin, Organik, Illmac, Serious Jones, Avocado, Poisen Pen, Ars, Hollow, Diz, Lush, Cruger, Okwerdz, Kid Twist, Eurgh, Goodz, Hitman Holla, etc.

It pretty much covers battlerap's different era's since the advent of the internet.

I highly suggest getting it, it's only $15 too.

www.battlerapbook.com

I'll post some interesting things I learned later after I finish reading.

I was wondering the same. I might be interested if it was someone really in the know, but if it is someone on the outside looking in then this would probably just be filled with the same information everyone on this forum could probably recite by heart.

Btw. I got sent this as an explanation:

"Ryan O'Leary has spent most of his professional career in the field of sports journalism. He has covered sports at every level from the pros on down over the past two decades in and around Boston, Chicago and Indianapolis as well as at his alma mater, the University of Notre Dame.

He dabbled in hip-hop music in his younger days, recording three rather unremarkable albums — and he also dipped his foot into the battle rap pool, competing in several late-1990s text battles and occasionally getting down on stage in Chicago and elsewhere (though the stage was never really his comfort zone, which is clearly evident if you can find one of his battle videos online).

The idea for #BARS came about somewhat randomly. While going down a rabbit hole of YouTube battles one night late in 2013, Ryan wondered to himself whether anyone had actually published a history book on battle rap. Unable to find one, he (for some reason) decided that he would be the one to create it. Amazingly, he actually followed through on that decision ... and his lazy ass managed to follow through in less than five years.

Ryan currently works as the sports editor at the Daily Journal in Franklin, Indiana."

My copy is en route. Between this and the upcoming ‘Death of the Territories’ book coming in a couple of weeks, I am actually looking forward to books!

Was listening to the authors interview that was posted on here couple months ago. He was talking about the start of text battles which was interesting. Also reminded me how old I am, cause I remember that Davey D hiphop forum. That shit is mad old lol, but catapulted the other rap forums. Was lots of great hip hop information on their. I first found out about the infamous Biggie canadian interview that he ranked the random rappers and shitted on E-40, Spice 1, Craig Mack etc

Anyway the guy seems to have a good pulse on how the text and stage battles came along on the internet. Seems interesting enough to give a read.

yeah - the chapter summaries https://www.battlerapbook.com/bars-chapter-summaries seem pretty on the money, nerdoids like us will probably bemoan a lack of detail - but looks alright,

not feeling the Juice quote on the front though - I think the transition is to battling as a career - with notable exceptions, music careers aren't being killed or launched by individual battles/events etc in the way they were before.

it went from being a path into music, to a path in and of itself

The author Ryan is a friend, who is a professional sports journalist for a living. He's been consistently watching battles for over 15 years. Its a passion of his, and he decided to marry his interest years ago to make a project out of it. Since then he has relentlessly been interviewing, and in contact with the most important people in battle rap. I cosign him, and a lot of important people on this site do too. Erik Foreman, Ledge (Pat), HBY (Mike), Avo, Luke are all actually in the book.

Not to be a dick but I thought he was some kind of (possibly gay) erotic novel writer based on the covers of the other books linked on amazon?

Definitely gonna order this sometime in the next week though.

Yeah that is hilarious. It's almost impossible to find this guy among the tons of lady porn written by a guy with the same name, lol
