Unless you count WRC's, that was best of 3 battles. And I'm pretty sure that was all written.

Percee P and Lord Finesse is technically the first written/Written one, and both are on footage.

1989 and then again in 2003 for a movie if that counts(SBX Holding Down the Tradition)

But I dunno if you're counting that cause when people talk about written battles that isn't generally the kind of written material they're talking about.

Either way assuming this is for a video it should be mentioned.

The Saurus battled Madness at Battle of the Bay 1 in 2008. Before that they had several freestyle battles from Tourettes and what not.

Freestyle/Freestyle I'm assuming meaning on camera.

Like you know there are scenes where the same guys show up all the time and that's been happening since there were tournaments.

I heard NoCan once say before Scribble '07 he'd beaten Franco six times.
He was sure he'd lose because there's was no way he would beat Franco seven times in a row. Spoiler: He won.

Rematches used to be way more common, even if they all weren't on camera. The OP is kind of a strange distinction that is centered around this current era and the "freestyle vs written" sort of dichotomy. I know we just kind of use that as short hand for the battling in the past and the idea now of how people know and specifically prepare for their opponents in advance, which wouldn't even always happen with street battles, but it makes discussing some history shit like this more murky when you define it like that and not everything in battle rap fits so neatly into those categories.

Since people are throwing out high profile older rematches, Remy Ma vs Lady Luck.

Yeah, this one. People forget that their battle for the movie Wildstyle was a REMATCH, not the original clash (Which happened a year or so before). This puts it as a rematch on video, dating back to 82/83, the earliest days of rap.

Haha! These kind of posts always give me a headache because I'm never sure if people mean 'in rap' or 'in the modern era'.

They battled a few months before at Madd Illz Lounge Battles Tournament in Orlando, in the finals, and I think that's what set up the rematch at BOTB1.

Back then when Saurus used to battle at Tourettes Without Regretts like every month, he did beat Orukusaki and Tantrum a couple of times.

But my favorites are him against Bo-Rat.
Its a four part saga but I only found 3 of them on youtube.

"Battle me? Forget it, son. We've battle 4 times and you never won"

But you know, all the west coast rappers have battle a few times before the written era:
A few that I can remember.
